Protecting: Rural communities | Climate | Environment | Wildlife | Biodiversity
Wildlife Custodians International Group Ltd (WCI) is a UK-based company dedicated to generating biochar-based carbon credits across Africa.
We focus exclusively on projects that deliver real benefits for:
Our biochar is produced from highly invasive tree species—problematic invaders that threaten Africa’s landscapes. In South Africa alone, over 6 million hectares of these trees need eradication. Until removed, they harm wildlife, traditional grazing lands, indigenous plants, farming operations, nature tourism, and rural economies.
We convert this biomass into premium biochar using locally made, artisan ‘Kon-Tiki’ kilns. The biochar is then enriched with a range of nutrients, creating an innovative fertiliser optimised by agronomists at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. This ensures maximum effectiveness for specific crops and soils. We sell to small and large-scale farmers, garden centres, and the public—driving sustainable agriculture.
Climate change hits Africa hardest. Biochar locks carbon in soil for centuries, offering a reliable solution with bonus benefits for ecosystems and communities.
Poor farming practices have depleted African soils, demanding urgent action. Our enriched biochar boosts soil health and crop yields cost-effectively—outperforming traditional fertilizers for smallholders and industrial farms alike.
Invasive trees devastate Africa’s biodiversity. We clear them responsibly, killing stumps and minimising seed spread. We also partner with farmers to cut back on annual burning, a major CO2 source. This restores habitats, boosts biodiversity, and safeguards native flora and fauna.
Launching in 2026 with a leading seed industry partner, our biochar-based seed encapsulation initiative will promote indigenous grasslands and trees in Southern Africa. Stay tuned for details in early 2026.
By revitalizing landscapes, we preserve vital food and shelter for wildlife and livestock. This supports traditional farmers and wildlife tourism, fostering economic resilience.
We prioritize artisan methods over industrial ones: manual biomass collection and labor-intensive kilns. In areas with 50%+ unemployment, job creation is our top social priority—stimulating growth where it’s needed most.
Our ‘Kon-Tiki’ kilns are simple, effective conical designs that produce high-quality biochar while minimizing emissions via a ‘fire curtain’ effect.
To scale up, we’ve partnered with a South African engineering firm to develop ergonomic, patent-pending kilns and equipment. These reduce worker strain, boost output, and are easy to use. Sold as DIY kits, they assemble with basic tools.
In collaboration with the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN)—South Africa’s top-ranked agricultural research institution and a world-class facility—we’re crafting a line of biochar-based fertilisers.
Whether you need a general formula with bio-stimulants or a custom blend for your soil and crops, we’ve got you covered. We deliver throughout KwaZulu-Natal, with national expansion planned.
